So many people don't seem to think about it at all, and I would think in an industry like this, where there are a thousand unpublished writers clamoring for every available slot, people would give more consideration to the PITA factor. Unless you're a brilliant bestseller, you can probably be replaced fairly easily, and if I were an editor I'd certainly lean away from prima donnas who were a major pain to work with but didn't bring in enough extra revenue to balance that out. Some people don't even think about that, though, or it seems not.

And I've known people who've done that in various day jobs. [eyeroll] So much ego, so few clues.

Kara -- house style is my biggest gripe too, honestly. There's one change they wanted to make in "Unfinished Business" that's a house style issue, where my honest opinion is that they're Doing It Wrong. The only reason I was able to prevail there is that the exact same word went through Hidden Magic my way, and I was able to argue for consistency. In general, though, I do a lot of teeth-gritting on that issue.

Also agree about the copyedits being more problematic than first edits. I definitely second the rec to read through all the comments before actually getting down to work.

House style's probably my biggest kvetch, and what I've pushed back the most on. One of my editors told me that I wasn't "even a 5 out of 10 on the author stubbornness scale" -- it was meant reassuringly, but I found it amusing that I definitely rated 4-ish. It's good to know where I stand, though, and frankly, I'd be a little concerned about writers rated as 1s.

Copyedits actually give me a harder time than revisions, since I sometimes feel as though copyeditors aren't taking the context of the story into account, and are just following rigid rules. But maybe my writing style just lends itself to more copyeditorial nitpicking.Karalynnhttp://karalynnlee.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1847902007209931042.post-65328373378786086172010-08-11T12:25:16.418-07:002010-08-11T12:25:16.418-07:00You could probably do an entire post on how not to...You could probably do an entire post on how not to blow your entire goodwill bank on stupid shit.

(*grin* I'm watching someone do this very thing at my day job.)Suzan Hardenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04600258874634909988noreply@blogger.com
