I just had to share this here because it's incredibly cool. My faith in humanity and particularly the American chunk of it just went up a notch. :D
Royal yes to diversity at Davis Senior High
The students of Davis Senior High (in Davis, California) elected a gay couple as their homecoming royalty. Even more amazing, there's been no protest or wanking, from the administration, the student body or the parents and community (at least as of the time the article came out, which was Saturday). Amazing! And very heartening. Go, Davis! I hope it spreads.

I wonder, has anyone rewritten the old fairy tales from a gay perspective? Or maybe Romeo and Julian? I wouldn't be suited to write them but they could be popular.
Charles -- Torquere did an anthology called Torqued Tales with stories based on fairy tales, but most of them aren't just a direct-to-gay translation. That sort of thing can be a lot of fun to read, though, especially of they're meant to be humorous rather than just a straight [cough] conversion.
I've never seen a "Romeo and Julian" direct conversion, but the basic idea of lovers coming from two hostile groups is used all over the place, in gay as well as het romance; it just depends whether the writer gives a nod to Shakespeare or just lifts that one plot element out and builds something completely new on it.

Wow! That is so awesome! Maybe there is hope for us, you know? Here I am railing against a country that has crazy conservatives burning and banning a lovely children's book called "And Tango makes three" because of homosexual penguins and this story brings me some hope again. Thanks for posting this!
Ello -- awesome, definitely. [nod] I've been following the Jena Six story and wincing, and wondering what the hell's going on with this country and all the hate, and then something like this happens to show that there are whole communities of people who are cool. Definitely needed a good story. :)

I like Charles' idea a lot.
Thanks for sharing this. With the incredible amount of anti-gay (anti-everything not WASPY, it seems) I was getting even more cynical and curmudgeonly. This brightened my day.
WW -- yes, especially recently, there's been a boatload of anti-, hasn't there? :/ It was great seeing this and I had to share. [nod/smile]

That is totally awesome. That's wonderful!
SS -- isn't it? :D I just hope it takes root and spreads. [crossed fingers]

How cool! Thanks for this. And Peter Cashorelli did two books of re-worked fairy tales (for adults, but not erotica) from Gay perspectives that are really wonderful!
Namaste,
Lee
Lee -- thanks for the note on Cashorelli's books; I'll have to go track those down. :)
