31 March 2018 -- Weird Nature Anthology -- ed. Lynne Jamneck
What are we doing?
Where are we going?
What will we find?
Though some among us have realised the importance of sustainable living, in the broad sense of everyday life, we still demand too much. Our capitalist dispositions have driven a wedge between ourselves and nature; we have become transfixed by the shine of chrome, the luxury of packaged lives, no longer seemingly aware of the solid earth beneath our feet.
At an ever-advancing tipping point, humanity persists in its war against the natural world. Running a trail of extinction and cutting down vast swathes of oxygen-producing forests, we breed at an alarming pace, overpopulating a planet we seem hell-bent on reigning in – but at what cost? It seems we’re playing a cruel joke on the system that sparked our existence, and which has sustained us ever since.
Or could the joke be on us?
There is something inherently weird in our behaviour toward Nature. Two distinct energies, two conscious mentalities, humanity and the natural world find themselves at loggerheads. Can we be held accountable if – as part of nature ourselves – we are driven by the need for survival, the way all species are? And if the answer is no, should we not anticipate that Nature will do the same?
Force of Nature (working title) will be an anthology of original short fiction that explores the physical and metaphysical boundaries between humanity and the natural world.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Story length: 2500 to 10 000 words
Payment: 7c p/w up to 7K – 5c p/w for stories longer than 7K
Send submissions to: forceofnaturesubs AT gmail DOT com
Please send files in any of the following formats: .doc, .docx, .rtf
Though our scientific knowledge has increased exponentially alongside technological development, there remains much about the natural world we still do not understand. Stories for Force of Nature should involve nature and the weird at their core; how the author wishes to interpret these themes is entirely up to them. Comedic stories will be a tougher sell but by all means, if you have a story that otherwise fits the guidelines, don’t hesitate to submit it. Try to avoid anything that is overtly cautionary. While the idea for the anthology was significantly inspired by climate change and the impact wrought on the planet by human habits, I don’t want stories that lecture. That said, I’m not opposed to stories in which the human factor gets served the short end of the stick.
While I don’t want a collection full of quiet stories, I will mention here that I am a big fan of the sublime. Wordsworth with a modern sensibility. Or just Wordsworth.
In terms of genre, I have no stipulations. Use a blank canvas and fit your story to the genus that suits it best.
I look forward to reading your work!

31 March 2018 -- Battling in All Her Finery -- Mad Scientist Journal
We are creating an anthology titled Battling in All Her Finery: Historical Accounts of Otherworldly Women Leaders. It will be a collection of speculative fiction stories about women leaders in any field. We use an inclusive definition of "woman" and "female," and we welcome stories about anyone who identifies as a woman on some level. For this anthology, our pay will be 2 cents/word.
We are particularly looking for stories from authors who are underrepresented in fiction: people of color, LGBTQ, non-Western religions and cultures.
Each story is written from the perspective of someone who has been or been around the woman leader in question. Like our regular magazine, this narrator will also have a bio. Be certain that your story meets these requirements:
== First person
== 500-8,000 words in length
== Focuses on a woman leader
== Contains a speculative element
== Not a reprint
== Not a simultaneous submission
Here are some ideas that we pitched when we made our Kickstarter, but this is meant to be inspirational and not definitive.
== A general leading her dragon armada into battle.
== A CEO defending her megacorp from a hostile takeover.
== A woman-led, vampire-hunting biker gang.
== A senator in an intergalactic republic.
DO NOT send us poetry or screenplays.
Submissions should be in Standard Manuscript Format and submitted through our Moksha portal. Stories must be submitted no later than midnight Pacific time (GMT -8), March 31, 2018.
As with our regular submissions, we are asking for exclusive first worldwide electronic and print rights for one year. We will send an electronic contract for signature, and we pay via PayPal.

Queries can be sent to madscientistjournal@gmail.com.

15 April 2018 -- Speculative Masculinities -- ed. Jay Wolf, Ronan Sadler, Brandon O'Brien, D Franklin; Galli Books
Masculinity has, almost since the category of speculative fiction emerged in the early 20th century, been a concern of fiction written in the genre. A culturally dominant, Western, toxic form of masculinity has dominated storytelling in speculative fiction. In worlds as varied and diverse as the distant past of magical worlds and the far future of this one, models of maleness and masculinity tend to be the same toxic form of masculinity that dominates modern Western culture. We want to interrogate that model of masculinity, to problematise it, and to question it; we want to see other possible models of masculinity, models not centred on dominance and violence and repression of feelings; other role models for men. We are looking for fiction, essays and poetry which do this.
We are particularly looking for submissions from authors from marginalised identities and backgrounds, especially where those identities complicate the author’s relationship with masculinity, including but by no means limited to disabled writers, trans writers, and writers of colour.
Reading Period: January 15th-April 15th 2018. No responses to submissions will be sent out before May 2nd, 2018.
Fiction editors: Jay Wolf & Ronan Sadler
Masculinity, as so much of our media defines it, is discouragingly narrow; the constructs that define “masculinity” are often rigid and unforgiving. Toxic masculinity engenders violence to those marginalized by, as well as to those contained within, it. This violence looks and feels different to everyone, depending on their social location. But what if it didn’t have to be this way?
We’re looking for speculative short fiction that looks past the fitted mold of masculinity, the known and assumed qualities of what constitutes “manliness” that enforce an artificial exclusion. We want to see thoughtful futures, alternate histories, or far-flung fantasies that examine masculinity without boxing it in. We’re not looking for gender-based “gotcha” moments or punchlines. What can masculinity be when it is not a rigid social construct? The stories we are looking for will examine what it means to be masculine while leaving pre-judgments at the door.
Length: 1,000-7,500 words.
Payment: £0.08/word
Fiction Submissions Procedure:
•Please submit your essays as 14pt font, serifed (ex: Time New Roman, Courier, Garamond), double spaced, .RTF, .DOC, or .DOCX format documents.
•The subject line of your email should read FICTION SUBMISSION: [Title], where [Title] is the title of your story.
•Please include the wordcount of your story in the email.
•Email your submission to galli-books [at] galli-books [dot] co [dot] uk
•Please do not send multiple submissions at once, or submissions simultaneously submitted to another market or anthology.

WHAT WE WANT:
We’re looking for speculative stories with a strong humor element. Think Resnick and Sheckley, Fredric Brown and Douglas Adams. We welcome quality flash fiction and non-traditional narratives. Take chances, try something new, just make sure that your story is funny.
Puns and stories that are little more than vehicles for delivering a punch line at the end aren’t likely to win us over. The best way to learn what we like in general is to read a previous volume.
WHAT WE DON’T WANT
These are the tropes we see entirely too much of in the slush pile. You will improve your odds if you steer clear of these:
* Zombies
* Vampires
* Deals with the Devil / Djinn in a bottle variants
* Stereotypical aliens probing people, abducting cattle, and doing other stereotypical alien things.

30 April 2018 -- SNAFU -- Resurrection -- ed. Geoff Brown, Amanda J. Spedding, & Matthew Summers; Cohesion Press
Theme – Military Horror.
What we want: Military horror, and lots of it. Think Doom, Resident Evil, Terminator, Dog Soldiers, Aliens (the second movie, not the first)… anything that can be called a high-action monster story. And SOLDIERS!
This volume is like the previous volumes squared.
We want extreme action, and it has to be military or paramilitary action. Can be mercs or ex-soldiers, though, so long as they are hardcases.
And to say it again, full action. Nothing less.
Hoo-rah!
Payment: AUD4c/word and one contributor copy in each format released
Wordcount range: 2,000 – 10,000 words (query for shorter or longer)
No selections will be made until after the period closes.
Projected publication date: Late 2018
Please follow these guidelines when submitting to us:
1. Please put your full contact details and word count on the first page of the manuscript.
2. Standard submission format, with minimal document formatting.
3. Courier or Times New Roman set at 12pt. Italics as they will appear. No underlining.
4. Double spaced.
5. Please don’t use TAB or space bar to indent lines. Use ‘styles’ only. If unsure or using a program that has no styles, DO NOT indent at all. That’s still cool.
6. NO SPACE between paragraphs unless a line-break is required. ONE SPACE after full stops.
7. Please put full contact details on the first page of the manuscript (yes, I said this twice… it’s important).
8. Send your submission to Geoff Brown at editor@cohesionpress.com as an attachment (.doc/.rtf only)
9. In the subject line of your email, please put Resurrection: [STORY TITLE] (Replace [STORY TITLE] with your actual story title. Yes, unfortunately I do need to state this)
NO MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS
NO SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS
NO REPRINTS
Please include a brief 'hello, this is who I am' in your email body as a cover letter.
Blank emails with attachments will be deleted.
For a guide to standard submission format, see: http://www.shunn.net/format/story.html
The only variations to Shunn’s format are that italics MUST appear as they will be used – no underlining – and again, only one space after a full stop.
Anyone that fails to follow these guidelines will likely see their story shredded by mutant zombie-like creatures.

1 May 2018 -- Midnight Before Christmas -- ed. Vincent V. Cava; Midnight Hour Media
There's no doubt that the Holidays are the most magical time of year, but that doesn't mean dark happenings aren't lurking beneath your Christmas tree as well.
These books will be available on kindle, hardcover, paperback, and audiobook format. The title page of each story will be illustrated. We are looking for holiday related horror, dark sci-fi, dark speculative fiction, neo-noire, and cyberpunk stories. We like stories with Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza themes. Alternatively, they can simply take place during the holidays (like how Die Hard isn't really about Christmas) or even just involve wintery or snowy settings. Please read the general submissions for more details.
A word of advice: If you plan on sending us a Krampus story, please make sure it's a great one! We'll only have room for one in our collection and we're anticipating a lot of submissions so send something original!
Below is a little more about the project.
Word Count: 1000-10,000 words. This is not a hard word count. If you think you have a story that fits what we're looking for, but is a little long or a little short, send it our way.

13 May 2018 -- Sword & Sorceress 33 -- ed. Elisabeth Waters
The reading period for Sword & Sorceress 33 will begin on MONDAY, APRIL 23, 2018. It will end on SUNDAY, MAY 13, 2018.
Stories should be the type generally referred to as "sword and sorcery" and must have a strong female protagonist whom the reader will care about. See previous volumes of Sword and Sorceress for examples. We do not want stories with explicit sex, gratuitous violence, or profanity. We are NOT a market for poetry, horror, or dark fantasy. We are willing to consider stories set in modern times (urban fantasy), but we don't buy more than one or two of those for the anthology. We always want something short and funny for the last story.
No reprints. No simultaneous submissions.
With regard to multiple submissions, do not submit more than one story at a time. If we've rejected your first one, you may send one more, as long as it's before the deadline. We have occasionally bought someone's second submission. We have never bought a third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, or eighth submission. If you send us two stories, and we don't hold either of them, wait until next year to try again. Please do not re-submit stories we have already rejected (including stories rejected in previous years).
If you have not previously sold to Sword & Sorceress, please read What is a Short Story? and Why Did my Story Get Rejected? before submitting to us.
Reading period: Monday, April 23 to Sunday, May 13, 2018. Stories received before or after this period will be deleted unread.
Response time is expected to follow MZB's traditional standards: you should hear within a week if we're holding your story for the final line-up or rejecting it.
Length: up to 9,000 words, with preference given to shorter stories. The longer a story is, the better it has to be. Long stories should be submitted early in the reading period.
Cover Letter/e-mail: We don't actually need a cover letter, but our e-mail program does. It puts any e-mail with no body in the spam folder. So...
Please do not explain or describe your story in the e-mail. If your story can't stand on its own, fix the story. The e-mail should be brief. For example:
Dear Miss Waters,
Attached is my 4000-word story "The Dark Intruder" for consideration for Sword and Sorceress 33.
Sincerely,
(Ms.) Marion Bradley
If your name could be either male or female, please indicate whether you prefer Ms./Miss/Mrs., Mr., or Mx. in our reply. We're not asking for the details of your personal life, we just want to use the correct form of address. (MZB once did an entire story intro thinking a male writer called Terry was female.)
Formatting and Submission:
Format with one-inch margins on all four sides of page.
Please do not use a header or footer.
Your legal name, full mailing address, and email address must be in the upper left corner, single spaced.
Skip two lines, center the text, then put the title, with your name (or byline) on the next line. We're not as rigid as MZB was about pen names, but we expect them to be reasonable, rather than cute.
The rest of the manuscript should be single-spaced, with the first line of each paragraph indented 1/2 inch.
If you need to indicate a break, put "#" on a line by itself, centered.
Do not underline; use italics instead. Do not use bold face. We prefer Courier New font, size 12.
Word count will be determined by our word processor; that way it will be the same for everyone.
Save your document as an .RTF file (rich text format or interchange format, depending on what your computer calls it). E-mail as it as an attachment to mzbworks@gmail.com. The subject line should be "SS33, your last name, story title" (e.g.: SS33, Bradley, Dark Intruder) -- we don't want submissions caught in the spam filter. Remember that a computer is sorting this, so follow the format exactly. Use commas, not slashes, hyphens, etc. Do NOT change SS33 to something similiar (e.g.: S&S 33). We do our best to find stories that have not been sorted properly, but we don't guarantee success.
Rights purchased: first rights, non-exclusive eBook and audio book rights.
Payment: 6 cents per word as an advance against a pro rata share of royalties and foreign or other sales.

30 May 2018 -- Blood in the Rain 4 -- ed. Cecilia Duvalle and Mary Trepanier; Cwtch Press
Release Date: October 15, 2018
WORD COUNT: 2500 - 7000
PAYMENT: $75, one print copy to US authors, e-book to all
SUBMIT TO: submissions@bloodintherain.com
We are seeking erotic vampire tales that go beyond the one-handed read. Your work needs to entertain us in multiple ways--we want to flip those pages while squirming in our seat. Make us cringe, make us hot, make us want to finish your story! Ideally your story will contain some element of horror. Go dark. Go scary. Go deep.
Give us a new take on vampires. Got a science fiction or fantasy piece? Send it our way. How about something historical? Yes, please. Make your story interesting and scorching hot--there must be explicit sex.
Note: Do not start your tale with a thumping-loud bar or club scene. Actually, we never need to see another vampire in a club, ever again. If you use this tired trope, you better do it in a way that blows our minds.
If you are unfamiliar with the series, please familiarize yourself with what we are looking for.
Rights: We would like new material only for this anthology. If your story is accepted, Cwtch gains nonexclusive right to publish your story in this anthology in print, ebook, and audiobook form. Authors will retain copyright to their stories, but we ask you to not republish until after January 2020.
GUIDELINES (please follow these closely):
1: Submit only 2500-7000 word stories that are previously unpublished and not being considered elsewhere.
2: Attach a Word .doc or .docx file ONLY to your email. (NO OTHER FORMATS WILL BE CONSIDERED. RTFs will be unopened and not considered.) Make sure your document is double spaced, Times New Roman, black font. Indent half an inch at the start of each paragraph and use double spacing for the entire file; do not add extra lines between paragraphs or use any other irregular spacing.
3: Include your legal name and pseudonym (if any), clearly indicating which is which, your mailing address, and your best email address in the header of your Word file.
4: Include a 50 word-or-under third person bio at the end of your story. PLEASE, do not submit multiple files.
5: Submit your story with the title and byline (centered at the beginning of your story) as you would want them published if the story’s accepted. Make sure to thoroughly proofread your story before submitting.
6: No stories featuring bestiality or sex with underage characters. Keep it adult.
Please send the story from an email address you check frequently. We will usually confirm that we have received your submission within 72 hours. Offers of acceptance will be made by July 15, 2018.

31 May 2018 -- Apotheosis 2 -- ed. Jason Andrew
Apotheosis 2 – More Stories of human survival and defiance in a world subjugated by the return of the Elder Gods. Humanity struggled to grow and evolve as a species for thousands of years forever caught in the shadow of a dread threat known only to a devoted few. When the stars are right, the Old Ones will return to claim utter dominion of the world. Lovecraft Mythos stories often climax at the moment of the fateful return of the Elder Gods and the audience is left to ponder what might happen next. This anthology features stories about humanity under the reign of the Elder Gods and ancient terrors.
What do we mean by Lovecraft Mythos stories in relation to Apotheosis? We’re looking for stories inspired by the stories of H.P. Lovecraft and associated writers such as August Derleth, Clark Ashton Smit, Robert E. Howard, Robert Bloch, Henry Kuttner, and Frank Belknap Long. We’re also interested in writers that inspired Lovecraft such as Edgar Allan Poe, Algernon Blackwood and Lord Dunsany. We’re interested in classic mythos gods and monsters and originals that have inspired by the mythos.
Good Fiction Examples:
== Apotheosis: Stories of Human Survival After the Rise of the Elder Gods
== "Boojum" by Elizabeth Bear & Sarah Monette
== "A Colder War" by Charlie Stross
== In the Hall of the Yellow King by Peter Rawlik
What type of stories are we looking for? We’re looking for character-driven stories set during a time in the future where the ancient terrors that once ruled the Earth have claimed complete and utter dominion of the Earth. We’re less concerned about the strict interpretation of the Elder Gods than good stories that deal with real human concerns. How do people survive? How does life change? Will people accept their new gods or will they rebel? What will it mean to be human in such a world of gods and monsters? Surprise us. Don’t give us stories that we’ve read before. We want worlds that feel real populated by characters from different cultures, genders, and ethnicities. Avoid cultural appropriation. Do your homework. We recommend that you read our last anthology to see the types of stories we enjoy.
What types of submissions should I avoid? We’re not as interested in the moment the ancient horrors return and conquer the world, but how humanity survives after the war is lost. Flashbacks are OK, but the story should not be about that time. We enjoy historical mythos fiction, but this is not the anthology for it. Stories must be set in the future. We are not looking for poetry for this anthology.
Submission Details:
== Word-count: 2,000 to 7,000 Worldwide print and e-book rights (exclusive for 6 months, non-exclusive for an additional 30 months).Exceptions will be made for stories accepted for “Best Of” anthologies. Apotheosis will be available in both Print on Demand and e-book formats.
== Submissions open April 1, 2018, and will close at 11:59 PST on May 31, 2018. You may submit at: apotheosis.anthology@gmail.com. (Do not submit before April 1st 2018 or your submission will be deleted.)
== Queries and questions may be sent to: apotheosis.anthology@gmail.com. (You may send queries and questions anytime.) All responses will be accepted or rejected by August 15th, 2018. Please do not query about submitted stories before then. No multiple or simultaneous submissions. Our word count limits are hard for open submissions. Reprints may be submitted, but we’re only accepting three or four at the most. (It should be clearly stated that the submission is a reprint in your cover later or this will be an automatic rejection later.)
== Please use standard format guidelines. If it is difficult to read, we will reject your story. Your story must include your name, address, telephone number, email address, and approximate word count on the first page. Your cover letter should include your complete contact information, story title, approximate word count, and a short bio.
== We’re only accepting a limited number of reprints. If you are submitting a reprint, please tag the subject with #Reprint. If we find out later your submission is a reprint and it wasn’t tagged, it will be dropped from the anthology.
== Payment: 3 cents per word (or 1 cent per word for reprints), paid within 90 days after publication. Plus contributor copy of print and e-book.

1 June 2018 -- Tales from the Crust -- ed. David James Keaton and Max Booth; Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing
We know we have a tendency to say, "Attention writers! Some new hotness!" but this is literally some new burn-the-roof-of-your-mouth hotness. Inspired mostly by David James Keaton’s struggle to find good pizza in California and pitching ideas to Max Booth when he’s hungry after working a 12-hour shift at the Overlook, get ready for…
TALES FROM THE CRUST: An Anthology of Pizza Horror
edited by Keaton and Booth and published by Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing.
Originally Keaton was thinking of calling it PIZZA MY SKULL because there’s a pizza place around San Jose called Pizza My Heart, meaning "piece of my heart," and so he thought a "piece of my skull" joke would be hilarious. Turns out that's a lot of assumptions to make about a gag. Also their pizza is gross. Luckily, George Cotronis brainstormed a much better title (though it might make people wonder if there’s a "Crustkeeper/Cryptkeeper" hosting the show). Speaking of Mr. Cotronis! Holy lord look at the cover art he’s come up with. WE WANT TO LIVE IN THIS WORLD…
This is exactly the vibe we’re going for here. Not so much the goofy Goosebumps thing you might imagine with a pizza horror story, but we’re taking it kind of seriously. Like we take our pizza seriously. The humor is inherent in the pizza theme already, so we’re playing this kind of straight. And if you think you’ve got what it takes, like a healthy love of the cheesy cuisine, send us your best work.
Now, you may be thinking: pizza horror taken seriously? What the good goddamn could I possibly write?
Good question! We don’t know. But we sure would like to read it.
That’s where you come in.
Write us a pizza story, and make it scary.
