Writers and Money

John Scalzi wrote an excellent post called Unasked-For Advice to New Writers About Money which I recommend highly. Scalzi is a successful SF writer and has been at this for a while. He's not always delicate about what he says [cough] but he makes a lot of excellent points. He admits that not every chunk of advice will apply to every single person, but there's a lot of value here, I think, for just about anyone who's freelancing in just about any field.

This is why I have a good job outside of writing, although it often lets me work my writing into the plan.

Sarai -- welcome! I was hoping some other folks would find it helpful. [nod]

Charles -- I go the "working spouse" route, myself. :) Even back when I was working full time, though, I was always writing too, around the edges.

I read the article a few days ago, and found it very helpful as well. It was good of you to share it. It's so easy to fantasize about the writing lifestyle but, from what I've heard, not as easy to actually live it!

Booklady -- thanks. :) When I read the post, I also read through the comments and I really had to O_O at the editor who said that fairly frequently he gets calls from first-time novelists wanting to know when they should get their check, because they need to give two weeks' notice at their day job. I mean, seriously, what rock are these people living under?? :/ There was some grumbling over the post, both in comments and elsewhere that I saw, but on the whole I think every baby writer should be required to read it.

This is what happens when I read something too fast! I originally read the article during my lunch break, so I didn't have much time. Now I'll have to go back and read the comments.
