Twenty Years

Over the 4th of July weekend in 1989, I got on a plane and flew down to Anaheim to meet a guy for the first time ever in realspace. We'd met met in an online fantasy RPG called GemStoneII, on the old GEnie network, and had become close over the previous few months. We were both sort of nervous, but he didn't turn out to be an axe murderer or anything ;D and the trip worked out well. It wasn't a huge, swooping, love-at-first-sight sort of thing, but that was twenty years ago and we're still together. We've been married now for thirteen years come August, so I'd say the gamble of taking that plane trip -- which all the flailing hysterics who are terrified of the evil internet will tell you to Never Ever Do!!! in this fearful age -- was a pretty good gamble. :D

In about twelve hours Jim and I'll be getting on a plane and going up to San Francisco, where we'll be touristing around for a week. We've done it before and both love the place; the weather is great and the food is better, and we're just going to hang out and relax and revel in having known the love of our lives for twenty years, which is pretty darned good these days.

I'll be taking the laptop but probably won't be reading blogs/journals/etc. all that much. If anything cool happens, or you post something you think I'd be particularly interested in, feel free to e-mail me or leave a link here.

Don't crash the internets while I'm gone! ;D

Have fun, and, if they are still open, have dinner at the Pacific Cafe (out in the Richmond district) and breakfast at that little diner next to the Cliff House (right by the Sutro Baths). Those were two of my favorite haunts from the twelve years I lived in SF.

WW -- thanks for the recs! We're up at the Embarcadero, but if we get down that way we'll give it a shot. (And Jim just said there's a bus a few blocks away that goes by the Cliff House, so that's definitely a possibility. :D

Charles -- it's funny in an eyerolly way how many people seem to think that the internet is full of predators, not considering that the people on the internet are the same people you also see in realspace. Congrats to you and Lana too; you seem to be doing fine and I'm sure you'll make twenty and beyond. [smile/hug]

LW -- thanks, hon! We're going to a theater that actually takes seat reservations O_O to see Public Enemy, and then Ice Age 3 in 3D. Johnny and Christian for me, and a 3D movie for Jim. [grin] Not so frantic, maybe, but definitely a good time.

Too late. I, um, kinda crashed the internets....

In other news, congratulations!!! :D

(In 1989, my net connection was a rotary-dial telephone scotch-taped to a manual typewriter. Just saying, is all...)

Steve -- LOL! Well, they seem to have recovered so we'll forgive you. :D

And thanks!

Oh, that sounds wonderful! Hope you're having a great time.

P.S. I met my hubby on the internet, too. It's one of those things that nobody talks about but so many people do. Why shop locally when you can go all over the world? ;-)

Caryn -- we're definitely having a great time. :) And yes, LOL! Why limit yourself? You're more likely to find the perfect person if you widen the pool of possibilities. :D
